This manual shows you how to set
up your InterNetCon Satellite Internet Services. The steps should be followed in
written order.
In general, setting up a
satellite connection on a Windows PC is something that takes a few steps.
InterNetCon tested on Windows 98, W2000, Millennium Edition and NT 4 and on all
Windows versions we achieved very good performance, although it should be said
that Windows Millennium Edition was the least satisfactory when it comes to
download speeds.
Since we are still learning
every day, this manual is subject to changes. In order to keep up to date on
software, hardware and all related issues, we advise you to visit our website
regularly.
Kind regards,
InterNetCon
Cluj-Napoca
InterNetCon uses multiple
satellites. Before trying to point the dish we kindly advices to read carefully
on the site what satellite you are going to use. Pointing the dish it is a
delicate operation and should be performed only by the experienced people. If
you already have the dish installed we advice you to find a company who sell
satellite equipments and ask for one person to come and point the dish for you.
This will be costless and will not take long time.
We advice you do not use
tracking devices, motorizing devices on a satellite dish used for Internet
Reception. We observe that motorized equipments do not point the dish correctly.
We observe many receiving problems to customers who use dish with tracking
equipment.
The dish size you need (in
centimeters diameter) depends on where you are located. We kindly advice you to
use antennas from 1.2 m up to be sure you can work even on heavy weather
conditions: sand storm, heavy rain, fog, water storm, etc.
Satellite Internet Service works
via an a-symmetrical connection. This means that you will need a satellite
receiver (DVB/IP PCI Card or USB Device) for the downstream and a conventional
connection to your ISP (by telephone line, cable, LAN or wireless) for the
upstream.
Usually installing the device it
takes following steps:
-
installing the hardware
-
installing the driver
-
installing the software
-
(installing additional software, per example TechniSat Sky Star 2
card require you to have Internet Explorer 5 or above, Windows Media Player 6.4
or above and Direct X 8 or above)
-
setting up the DVB card (frequency, symbol rate, pid)
We kindly advice you to locate
on our website in Support area the correct DVB settings for the satellite you
use and setup the DVB card as presented. Incorrect DVB settings will not allow
you to lock the signal.
We remind you do not ask for a test account before completing following
procedure:
-
correctly point the dish
-
correctly install the DVB
card and software
-
correctly setup the DVB
card and lock the signal
-
reading this document for
knowing how to establish the VPN
Please do not ask for test
account before completing successfully this tasks because our system will allow
you to have maximum 2 free test account per month and if you are not complete
this steps when it is not 100 % sure that you are ready to test the service and
the only thing what you done it is that you waste your opportunity to test for
free. We kindly advice you to understand our well intentions to offering you a
quality service but also to protect our platform do not be overloaded with
requests from the people who are not fully ready to test
the service.
Once you complete all procedures to point the dish, install DVB card and
lock the signal we will be more than happy to see you testing our service and
enjoying it.
In general: As you probably
noticed, the Windows 98 TCP/IP is not working very efficient on satellite links.
A number of patches and repairs have been made available to improve the
performance.
InterNetCon advises you to
follow these steps one by one.
1.
Update your Windows version
Go to Windows Update (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com)
and click on productupdates. This will check
your settings automatically and show a recommendation. You should download the
first mentioned update.
2.
Install the Dcom98.exe file
Installation of the Dcom98 file will change your network settings. You
should always run the Dcom98 file after
updating your system. Updates overrule Dcom98 changes.
3.
Change IP Packet size
·
Go to the properties of your Network Neighborhood (click with your
right mouse button on the icon on the Desktop)
·
Now select the dial up adapter and click the properties
button.
·
Select the advanced tab
and select 'PacketSize'. It normally is on 'Automatic' but you should change it
to 'Large'.
·
Now do the same for the Dial up VPN adapter (VPN Support).
Don’t restart the computer
yet, first go to step 4.
4.
Registry entries
In order to maximize
performance, you should run the w98.reg file. This will alter registry settings
that are supported by the HTTP protocol. You can also run the TCPsettings.reg
file to optimize browsing (it will enhance browsing speed considerably) but we
have to mention that it is not officially supported by HTTP protocol. We tested
it and it worked, though.
5.
Restart your computer
Dcom98.exe |
|
The Dcom98.exe file is a patch specifically for a-symmetric connections.
We advise you to go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and click on
productupdates. This will check your settings automatically and show a
recommendation. You should download the first mentioned update. Install
Dcom98.exe only after the windows update. Updating your windows will
overrule the changes implemented by Dcom98.exe
|
W98.reg |
|
In order to maximize performance, you should run the w98.reg file. This
will alter registry settings that are supported by the HTTP protocol and
it will result in a considerable increase in browsing and download speed.
|
TCPsessions.reg |
|
Running this file (just doubleclick on the icon) will change your TCP/IP
registry entries to enhance browsing speed. We have to mention that it is
not officially supported by HTTP protocol. We tested it and it worked,
though. Without these entries, the download speed will be the same, but
it will take more time to load all the pictures and frames on webpages,
since default Windows settings only allow 5 TCP sessions at a time.

registry entries. Running W2K.reg will change the settings for you. This will
alter registry settings that are supported by the HTTP protocol. You can also
run the TCPsettings.reg file to optimize browsing (it will enhance browsing
speed considerably) but we have to mention that it is not officially supported
by HTTP protocol. We tested it and it worked, though.

If you want your network to have
access to the Internet via satellite, you will have to set up a proxy. This
means that one computer in the network (the Proxy server) will have access to
the Satellite, sharing it with the other computers in the network. The proxy
server will dial in to the Internet and set up a VPN. Therefore, the DVB
Receiver Device should be connected to the Proxy server and the VPN software
should be installed and set up on the Proxy server.
This is how it works:
More documentation for customers who want to install satellite service on
